Background Information:
These bronze tweezers are a well-preserved example of a common Roman personal grooming implement dating to the 1st–2nd century A.D. Formed from a single folded strip of bronze, the spring action created by the bent metal allowed the narrow tips to grip small hairs or other fine objects with precision. This simple yet effective design remained virtually unchanged throughout the Roman Imperial period.

Personal grooming occupied an important place in Roman daily life. Tweezers were regularly used for removing facial and body hair, reflecting Roman ideals of cleanliness and personal appearance. Literary sources describe tweezers as standard items in the toiletry kits of both men and women, while archaeological discoveries show that they were frequently carried together with nail cleaners, ear scoops, cosmetic implements, and small knives in folding grooming sets known as chatelaines or toilet sets.

Roman bronze tweezers were manufactured by specialist metalworkers who forged and shaped thin bronze strips before carefully finishing the gripping ends. Their practical design made them durable, lightweight, and suitable for everyday use. Comparable examples have been recovered from military forts, urban settlements, villas, bathhouses, and graves throughout Britain, Gaul, Germania, the Danubian provinces, and the Mediterranean, illustrating the widespread adoption of Roman standards of hygiene across the Empire.

Dating to the 1st–2nd century A.D., this object belongs to the height of the Roman Imperial period, when personal care formed an established part of everyday life for civilians and soldiers alike."
