Osmanisk sultan II. Abdülhamit Han Tughra Sølvspejl - Sølv - Tyrkiet - Sen osmannisk periode
An exceptionally large and richly decorated Ottoman silver mirror dating from the reign of Sultan Abdülhamid II (1876–1909), bearing the Sultan’s tughra and Ottoman silver control marks.
The circular silver reverse is entirely worked in high-relief repoussé and chasing. Its elaborate composition incorporates finely detailed floral scrolls, palmettes, rosettes and a scalloped border. Applied crescent-and-star emblems are arranged around the surface, some displaying warm gilt-toned highlights that create an attractive contrast with the naturally aged silver.
Six raised oval medallions alternate between abundant floral arrangements and architectural representations of monumental Ottoman buildings, mosques and fortified gateways. These scenes are surrounded by crescent motifs and minute punched decoration. The centre is dominated by a separately applied, highly sculptural floral ornament composed of a large rosette, scrolling foliage and symmetrical arabesques.
The background has been extensively hand-textured, enhancing the depth and definition of the polished raised decoration. The combination of repoussé, chasing, engraving and applied elements demonstrates a high level of Ottoman silversmithing.
The mirror carries the tughra of Sultan Abdülhamid II together with Ottoman assay/control marks, placing its manufacture within the late 19th or very early 20th century. With its impressive diameter of 36 cm and substantial total weight of 1,737 grams, it is a particularly imposing and highly decorative example.
Condition is consistent with age and use. The silver displays natural patina, tarnishing, surface wear, small irregularities and traces of earlier handling. Some joints, edges and applied decorative elements show minor age-related separations, old repairs or localised wear. These details are visible in the close-up photographs and form part of the object’s historical character. Please examine all images carefully, as they constitute an essential part of the condition description.
