Edited by Michitaka Ohta, the book presents a carefully selected survey of Daido Moriyama’s work from the 1970s, including several photographs that had not previously been published. Approximately 36 black-and-white images are reproduced in a restrained and powerful layout, generally placing a single photograph on one side of each spread. The selection includes Moriyama’s iconic photograph of a stray dog taken in Misawa in 1971, together with images made while wandering through cities and provincial areas across Japan. Grainy textures, strong contrasts and tilted compositions capture the darker, rawer aspects of everyday life and exemplify the radical visual language for which Moriyama became internationally recognised.
