Rav - Fossil matrix - Fortigryllus - 17.7 mm - 12.7 mm
Fortigryllus is an extinct genus of prehistoric crickets from the mid-Cretaceous period. It is represented by a single type species, Fortigryllus xiangrui. This discovery was published in the journal Fossil Record by a research team including Ji Xia (from Yangtze University), along with scientists from the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris and the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology.
Name Meaning: The genus name Fortigryllus combines the Latin fortis (strong/robust) and gryllus (cricket), highlighting its remarkably stout legs. The species name xiangrui translates to "auspicious sign" in Chinese.
Age: Mid-Cretaceous (late Albian–early Cenomanian, approximately 100 million years old).
Locality: Kachin amber mines, northern Myanmar.
The exceptionally preserved amber specimen displays unique morphological traits separate from other known cricket lineages:Robust Legs: All three pairs of legs are equally thick, featuring extraordinarily swollen and massive femora (thighs).
Wingless Body: The specimen is entirely wingless (apterous), likely an adult or a late-instar nymph.
Leg Spines: The fore tibia has 2 apical spurs, while the mid and hind tibiae have 1 apical spur each. The hind tibia is smooth and lacks lateral spines.
Specialized Hairs: The inner base of its cerci (tail-like appendages) is equipped with distinct clavate (club-shaped) and filiform (thread-like) sensory hairs.
Period: Cretaceous (100 million years old)
Location: Hukawng Valley, Myanmar
Size: Amber 17.7*12.7*3.7 mm
