Item Description A vintage Japanese marine sextant by Tamaya & Co., Ltd. , one of Japan's pioneering manufacturers of navigational instruments. This example, serial No. 11655, has a strongly aged, well-loved character, with visible verdigris patina across the brass arc and telescope fittings, a look that will particularly appeal to collectors who favour a heavier, more weathered vintage appearance. The brass arc is stamped "TAMAYA & CO., LTD No. 11655" alongside the maker's heart-shaped trademark. It is complete with its original fitted wooden case, which bears a brass "Tamaya & Co., Ltd." trademark plate and a working lock; the case shows honest wear consistent with its age, including some splitting and chipping at the joints. Inside the lid is an original calibration certificate for this instrument, issued by Daiichi Keiki Kogyo Co., Ltd. of Kobe and dated 10 March, Showa 49 (1974), recording the small correction values measured for this sextant at the time, together with a numbered "Recommended Product" seal from the Japan Surveying Instruments Manufacturers' Association. The set includes two interchangeable telescopes, two spare lens caps, and a small adjustment tool, all housed within the case's fitted compartments. The lens shows no cracks and remains fully usable for viewing, though there is some cloudiness present. As with any vintage optical instrument of this kind, its measuring accuracy can no longer be verified, so it is offered as a research piece, personal collector's item, or decorative object rather than for actual navigational use.
