For sale is a distinctive, presumably 19th-century French liturgical altar candlestick, featuring richly detailed Historicist decoration. Standing 45 cm (17.7 in) high, the candlestick has an elegant fluted column rising from a curved, three-sided base supported by three finely modelled lion-paw feet. Each side of the base is decorated with a different Christian sacred relief, giving the piece a particularly distinctive character: The Sacred Heart of Christ – one of the most recognisable motifs in Christian iconography, symbolising Christ’s divine love and sacrifice. Winged angel or cherub head – a traditional ecclesiastical symbol of heavenly presence and divine glory. Radiant triangle containing the Hebrew Tetragrammaton יהוה (YHWH) – representing the name of God, while the triangle traditionally symbolises the Holy Trinity in Christian iconography. The richly articulated cast elements, lion-paw feet, classically inspired fluted column and broad candle drip pan are characteristic of the Historicist style of 19th-century French ecclesiastical metalwork. The surface retains an attractive, naturally aged patina with signs of use and wear consistent with its age, preserving the authentic character of the piece.
