This striking sculpture is a traditional Balinese Winged Lion, known locally as a Singa Bersayap (or Singa Ambara). Hand-carved from wood and finished with classic polychrome pigments and gilt detailing, it serves as a powerful protective figure in Balinese culture. Look at the undamaged spikey hair locks. Fantastic old piece.
This Masterpiece weights 8Kg and measures 58x54x45cm and is specifically referred to as a Sendi Tugeh In traditional Balinese architecture, a Sendi is carved wooden base that supports the wooden pillars (tugeh) of an open-walled pavilion, known as a bale. The flat slot or area carved directly above the lion's back or tail section serves as the anchor point where the structural wooden column locks into place. Wood works it had a restored crack at the base.
