Fossil of a semi-aquatic choristoderan reptile (Monjurosuchus splendens) – Early Cretaceous
Name: Monjurosuchus sp.
Probable species: Monjurosuchus splendens
Classification: Choristodera
Age: Early Cretaceous
Locality: Western Liaoning, China
Despite the inclusion of "crocodile" in its name, Monjurosuchus is not a true crocodilian but belongs to the extinct order Choristodera. These animals were semi-aquatic reptiles inhabiting freshwater ecosystems during the Mesozoic Era, likely frequenting lakes, rivers, and riparian environments.
The Jehol Biota of western Liaoning is world-renowned for its exquisitely preserved fossils of dinosaurs, birds, fish, mammals, and reptiles. This specimen features a complete skeletal outline; the long tail, trunk ribs, and limb structures are particularly well-defined, making it a highly representative example of the aquatic or semi-aquatic reptiles from the Early Cretaceous of western Liaoning.
It belongs to the famous Jehol Biota. The specimen preserves a relatively complete skeleton of a small choristoderan reptile, including the skull, cervical vertebrae, trunk, ribs, limbs, and an elongated tail.
