Item Description This is a small two-drawer chest in Kamakura-bori, the traditional Japanese craft of carved and lacquered wood. The front of both drawers is carved in relief with a gourd and broad leaves, finished in vermilion red and deep green lacquer against a black ground. The sides, top and surrounding areas are covered in a hand-chiselled, honeycomb-like pattern. Red lacquer shows through the grooves between the black facets. The chest sits on a recessed black plinth, and each drawer has a slim black lacquered pull. The compact, nearly cubic form makes it suitable for keeping small accessories, stationery or keepsakes.
