Published on the occasion of the 2005 exhibition The Europeans: Photographs by Tina Barney, at London's Barbican Art Gallery. The book compiles a body of work captured between 1996 and 2004, during which Barney embarked on a modern-day version of the "Grand Tour" across Europe, gaining exclusive access to the homes and lives of wealthy, aristocratic, and bourgeois families.

Barney, who grew up in a prominent American family herself, utilizes her unique understanding of upper-class social structures to observe the European elite. Using a large-format camera, specialized lighting, and assistants, she captures almost life-sized portraits that walk a fine line between candid and highly choreographed tableaux.

The book critiques and explores "patrician otherness," juxtaposing the grandeur of generational privilege with the quixotic, mundane, and sometimes humorous realities of human behavior. Her subjects pose in opulent, historical interiors, yet Barney often catches a "serendipitous gesture"—such as a son casually wiping his nose or a father leaning awkwardly against a priceless heirloom—that punctures their rigid hauteur.

The monograph organizes its visual journey by country, highlighting how different nationalities express status, heritage, and fashion:

The monograph organizes its visual journey by country, highlighting how different nationalities express status, heritage, and fashion:

Italy (1996–1998): Focuses heavily on wealthy northern industrialist families in Milan and Turin. The images showcase baroque interiors and flamboyant Italian tailoring, featuring double-breasted suits and Neapolitan shoulders.

England (2001): Features nobility and Oxford students in their ancestral family estates. The visual tone here is more conservative, dominated by austere fabrics, loose-cut Savile Row tailoring, and traditional structured silhouettes.

France (2002): Documents Parisian bourgeois families in elegant city mansions, illustrating an eclectic but carefully balanced French style with tweed jackets and effortless tailoring.

Austria, Spain, and Germany (1996–2004): Expands the tour into other pockets of European high society, capturing traditional dress, formal hunting culture, and multi-generational family dynamics.

From the publisher: "'For almost thirty years Tina Barney has constructed a critique of patrician otherness in photographs made in rambling New England beach houses and New York apartments. Now, in her series The Europeans, we're off on a twenty-first century version of the Grand Tour. From Austria (1996) and Italy (1996-1998) to England (2001), France (2002), Spain (2003), and Germany (2004). Barney has confirmed a New World fantasy: that (even if your vantage point starts out high) the Old World rich live differently from you and me.' (Merry Forresta) Tina Barney's photographs portray relationships and at the same time invoke theatrical role-play reminiscent of nineteenth century portraiture. Each is a staged re-enactment of a prior moment and their power rests on their emphasis on often quixotic and ultimately human and mundane details. These photographic moments undermine the traditional relationship of subject to viewer and elide the status of portraits of the classes who would traditionally have commissioned painted family portraits.",
