Now available at auction from Second Vintage This classic vintage Seiko dress watch pairs an exceptionally clean silver sunburst dial with elegant 36 mm proportions, powered by the foundational in-house Seikosha caliber 560. Brand: Seiko Model: Crown Reference Number: J15003E Serial Number: 0172241 Movement: Manual wind Seikosha caliber 560, 21 jewels Dial: Silver sunburst with applied gold-tone indices Case Size: 36 mm (excluding the crown) Case Material: Gold-plated, gold-filled caseback Production Year: 1960 Condition: Good vintage condition. Timegrapher: -10-13s/day, performing remarkably well. Dial and Hands The exceptionally clean and attractive silver sunburst dial is very well preserved, displaying only very minor, isolated dust or spotting visible under macro inspection. The printing, reading "Seiko Crown" and "Diashock 21 jewels", remains crisp and intact across the surface. Clean, applied gold-tone indices mark the hours. The original gold-tone dauphine hands retain their shape and form, showing age-appropriate oxidation and spotting visible under close macro inspection. Case and Crystal The gold-plated case features a thin gold-tone bezel and a gold-filled caseback. It displays honest vintage wear, with moderate surface scratches and signs of use throughout the plated surfaces. The lugs retain a good overall shape but show some softening to their edges. There is noticeable verdigris and oxidation around the caseback rim where it meets the case body, which is typical for plated cases of this era. The watch is fitted with an unsigned knurled crown, where the plating appears intact with only minor wear. A domed acrylic crystal protects the dial, remaining clear with no major scratches, cracks, or crazing visible. Movement Inside is the manual wind Seikosha caliber 560, featuring 21 jewels and Seiko's Diashock protection. The movement appears generally clean, displaying engravings that read "SEIKOSHA", "21 JEWELS", and "560". There are some minor surface scratches on the plates and minor wear visible on the screw heads. Recording -10-13s/day on the timegrapher, the movement is exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece. Strap The watch is fitted with a black leather strap featuring contrast stitching. It appears to be in new or very lightly used condition, providing a comfortable and modern fit for the wrist. Condition Good vintage condition. The dial is wonderfully preserved, while the hands exhibit expected oxidation. The gold-plated case presents honest moderate wear, including softened lugs, surface scratches, and noticeable oxidation and verdigris around the caseback rim. The movement is running strongly, supported by excellent timegrapher results. Dimensions The case measures 36 mm (excluding the crown). Remarks This Seiko Crown offers a beautifully preserved silver sunburst dial and classic dress watch proportions. Powered by the historically significant Seikosha caliber 560, it represents a highly attractive and foundational piece of mid-century Japanese watchmaking. History Introduced in 1959 to replace the Seiko Marvel, the Seiko Crown line brought significant technical advancements to the brand's lineup. It featured a larger balance, a bigger mainspring barrel, and an improved Diashock system. The reference J15003E is powered by the manual-winding Seikosha Caliber 560, operating at 18,000 vibrations per hour. The Seiko Crown holds a special place in the brand's history, as it served as the direct technical foundation for the very first Grand Seiko, which was released in 1960.
