William Kentridge & Gerhard Marx — Fire Walker (Fourthwall Books, 2011) — SIGNED by Both Artists
In 2009, William Kentridge and Gerhard Marx were commissioned to create a public sculpture for the City of Johannesburg, installed in 2010 to coincide with the FIFA World Cup. Fire Walker — an eleven-metre-high steel figure of a street vendor carrying a burning brazier on her head — stands at the foot of the Queen Elizabeth Bridge in Johannesburg, on a site long used by informal traders and taxi washers. Eschewing the monumentalism of traditional public sculpture, Kentridge and Marx built the figure from flat steel plates that resolve into a coherent image from a single vantage point only — a pedestrian passing catches just a momentary view before it fragments into abstract black-and-white shapes.
This book, published by Fourthwall Books in 2011, goes far beyond documenting a single artwork. Edited by Oliver Barstow and Bronwyn Law-Viljoen, it brings together essays by Mark Gevisser, Mpho Matsipa, Alexandra Dodd, and Jonathan Cane & Zen Marie, interviews with the sculpture's collaborators, and extraordinary photo essays on the construction process, street vendors, and Johannesburg's older public monuments — opening up a genuine conversation about the meaning and fragility of public space in the city.
This copy is signed by both William Kentridge and Gerhard Marx on the title page, dated 2011.
