Koran - Qur'an - Safaivid - 1580
A single illuminated Arabic manuscript on burnished buff paper, 13 lines to the page in black naskh. This folio runs from the end of chapter 60, Al-mumtahana (The Test of Faith), revealed to the Prophet prior to his conquest go Mecca, and the heading and v.1-6 of chapter 61, As-Saff (The Solid Ranks). The last two verses of chapter 60 deal with the ethical and social boundaries of the Muslim community, closing the chapter with instructions on women's allegiance and a final warning against alliances with those who oppose Go. The fist 6 verses of chapter 61, focus on divine glory, the condemnation of hypocrisy (saying what one does not do), the call to stand firm like a solid wall in faith, and the prophecies regarding prophets—specifically Moses, Jesus, and the coming of Muhammad (Ahmad).
Verse endings are marked with simple but vibrant gold roundels with red and blue dots on the circumference. The surah heading is in white thuluth script on god ground and polychrome floral book-ends. The text block is ruled in gold, red, blue and black, and the wide margin carries a vertical illumination in a blue and gold palette shape, marking the beginning of the new chapter. The folio is in good condition for its age.
Please note that shipping costs are not solely the cost of the postal delivery service itself. Included within the shipping price is the work undertaken to research the article, to mount it, for photography, for uploading to Catawiki, for preparation and packaging the article securely and for transporting the article to the postal delivery agent for processing.
Also, please consider when bidding on this lot that this artwork is shipped from the UK. Import duties will now have to be paid by the recipient to the Postal Service when the parcel arrives in your country. This will likely vary between 5% and 20% of the sale price depending on your country's Import Rate, so please check this if you are concerned. This is a Tax collected on behalf of your Government and is not an additional fee charged by us.
New German customs regulations mean that we are now having to pay customs before the item leaves the UK. Regrettably we have to pass these costs on through a surcharge on postage to Germany. As we don't know the final auctions costs we have estimated the approximate value. If the custom costs more than we have anticipated, we will absorb the additional customs duty.
