Hermann Struck (1876-1944)

"Soldiers' Graves in Lithuania.".

Lithograph on Japan paper. Hand-signed. Title at the base of the lithograph (hidden under the mat). ca. 1918.

Sheet size: 28 x 22 cm.
Good condition. Age-related defects. Minor foxing.

Vintage frame with mat and glass. 31.5 x 26 cm. In very good condition. See photographs.

During World War I, Hermann Struck was an officer and advisor on Jewish affairs at the German Army High Command in Eastern Europe. He traveled to Lithuania, Russia, Belarus, Courland, and Poland, and thus came into contact with the Jewish community in these territories. During these years, he worked on unique landscapes and images of personalities that bear witness to a world ravaged by war.

Unmistakable strokes of one of the greatest artists of the 20th-century German avant-garde.
Struck is, without a doubt, one of the best engravers of his time. Initially belonging to the Berlin Section group, he taught his virtues to other artists such as Marc Chagall, Lovis Corinth or Max Liebermann.
