The 14270 was released at the Basel Fair in 1989 and put Rolex at the cross-section of sport and luxury. This model maintains the classic 36mm sizing of the Explorer. It sports a glossy black lacquer dial, with applied markers and numerals with white-gold surrounds, a sapphire crystal, and features a Rolex Caliber 3000 movement – an upgrade over the 1570 used in the preceding 1016. This piece has the "Swiss Made" dial (out of the 4 variants that were created by Rolex).
