Description from the seller
This exclusive lot features a comprehensive collection of 20 vintage Japanese abacuses (Soroban), offering a tangible history of Japanese mathematics and craftsmanship from the Showa era (estimated 1950s to 1980s).
This diverse set is ideal for collectors, resellers, or enthusiasts of retro industrial design. It includes a variety of styles ranging from high-quality wooden professional models to retro mid-century educational tools.
Distinguished Brands & Details: Upon inspection, this collection includes items from Japan's most renowned manufacturers:
Unshudo (雲州堂): Identified by the label "Unshudo Sei," this manufacturer from the Unshu region is legendary for producing the highest quality sorobans with exceptional bead movement.
Tomoe (トモエ): Features the iconic "Tomoe-jirushi" logo, a brand synonymous with reliability and standard Japanese education.
Sanko Soroban: One unique piece features a gold foil sticker reading "MEDE IN JAPAN" (a typographic error for 'Made'), a charming characteristic often found on export products from the mid-Showa reconstruction period.
Sun Soroban: Another vintage brand included in the set.
Materials & Composition: The lot showcases the evolution of materials:
Classic Wood: Several pieces feature traditional wooden frames (likely Ebony or stained hardwood) with bamboo rods and sharp-edged wooden beads, prized for their tactile feedback and distinct clicking sound.
Retro Synthetic: The collection includes mid-century models with cream and white synthetic beads set in black or wood frames, a style widely used in Japanese schools during the 1960s and 70s.
Accessories: Includes various original cases, ranging from cardboard boxes and plastic hard cases to traditional fabric pouches (checked patterns and solid colors).
Condition: These are authentic vintage items. They exhibit signs of age and use, including wear to the wooden frames, scratches, discoloration on the plastic components, and dust accumulation between the beads. The cases show signs of aging, stains, and wear. Please review the photos carefully to appreciate the genuine vintage character of this collection.
Dimensions: Sizes vary, but the standard models measure approximately 33 cm in length. Please refer to the scale in the photos for precise sizing.
