Description from the seller
This Swiss cradle exhibits typical 19th-century features: a fully wooden construction, sober yet functional design, carved handles, and the characteristic curved rocking feet. The finish and the use of solid wood point to artisanal craftsmanship, common in rural Swiss interiors.
Rare Swiss wooden cradle – circa 1850–1880
This authentic Swiss cradle from the 19th century (circa 1850–1880) is a particularly rare example of traditional Alpine craftsmanship. The cradle is entirely made of solid wood and rests on elegantly shaped sled feet, allowing it to be gently rocked.
The carefully sawn handles and the understated, functional design give the cradle a serene and timeless appearance. Over the years, the wood has developed a beautiful, warm patina that lends the object its unique character and historical value.
Originally intended for daily use, this cradle today is mainly a decorative and collectible object. It makes an impressive statement in a rural, rustic, or historic interior, but it is also highly loved by collectors of folk art and antique children's furniture.
