Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.
Handmade pendant with wire-wrapped Egyptian scaraboid stone amulet bead and handmade bail. The stone is carved in an oval form with stylised wings depicted on the surface rather than a fully modelled beetle back. The ancient bead is restrung with modern fittings, making it suitable for modern wear while preserving its historical charm.
The wire-wrapping technique, dating back to around 2000 BC, was a favoured method among ancient jewellery makers of many ancient civilizations. Renowned for its versatility and durability, this technique was cherished throughout history for creating intricate and timeless designs.
The ancient bead is carefully shaped and displays soft, natural tones of pale green with subtle earthy inclusions, characteristic of stone that has aged over centuries.
Length: ± 28,4 mm
Diameter bead: ± 14 mm
Condition: good condition and wearable. The ancient bead is restrung and combined with modern materials and fittings. Signs of wear consistent with age and use. See images.
Composed with beads originating from various old collections, acquired in the UK between 2016-2024.
Every ancient bead shows subtle variations and signs of age, reflecting its history and adding to the unique charm of every composition.
Certificate of Authenticity (PDF) is available upon request.
In ancient Egypt, the scarab beetle was associated with the god Khepri and was believed to represent the cycle of life, death and rebirth. Scarab beetles were often depicted in art, incorporated in jewellery or used as amulets, symbolizing protection and good fortune.
Scarabs were also inscribed for use as personal or administrative seals. Additionally, some scarabs were created for political or diplomatic purposes to commemorate or advertise royal achievements.
Scarab beetles also played an important role in Egyptian funerary rituals. They were placed as amulets in tombs or positioned on the heart during the mummification process. The Egyptians believed the scarab beetle would ensure the deceased had a safe passage into the afterlife.
