Description from the seller
Reliquary Ex Spinea D.N.J.C.
Gilded brass
Origin: Italy, private collection
Period: Second half of the 19th century
Gilded brass reliquary from the second half of the 19th century, containing a fragment of the Ex Spina of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
On the back is affixed the bishop's seal in seal wax.
From the Thorn of Christ's Crown (Ex Spinea)
This relic, a small fragment of immense spiritual value, is attributed to the Crown of Thorns placed on Jesus' head during His Passion. Each fragment of the Thorn bears witness to Christ's pain and sacrifice for the salvation of humanity. Devoutly preserved through the centuries, they have traveled across sanctuaries, churches, and monasteries, becoming objects of veneration throughout Europe.
The veneration of the Crown of Jesus reflects deep Christian spirituality: the faithful turn to it in prayer, meditate on the Passion, and seek comfort in the awareness of sacrifice, allowing themselves to feel close to the mystery of redemption.
The relic is particularly venerated during Good Friday and the Holy Week processions, moments when sacred history and popular devotion intertwine.
Beyond its religious significance, the thorn represents a tangible link to the historical events of the Passion, embodying a symbol of faith that has endured through centuries and cultures. Its preservation in reliquaries made of glass and precious metal protects its integrity.
