Impressive and rare - Mask - Makondé - Mozambique (No reserve price)

This mask (lipiko) is associated with initiation ceremonies among the Makonde. It is carved from a very lightweight wood. It is always worn with a fabric attached along the mask that falls over the dancer's shoulders, forming part of an elaborate costume designed to completely conceal their identity. These helmet masks are carved with the face tilted upward, with bulging eyes. The hollow nose overlooks oversized, slightly open lips revealing smoothed teeth. The ears are positioned at mouth level. The realism of this type of mask is enhanced by the insertion of human hair. This mask is decorated with relief tattoos and is characterized by a striking contrast of different angles, planes, and folds.
