Mineral: Hematite (iron oxide)
Crystal habit: Botrioidale / mammellonare ('Kidney Ore')
Location: Rio Marina Mine, Valle Giove, Elba Island, Tuscany, Italy
Weight: 334 g
Dimensions: 10 × 9 × 4 cm
Conditions: Natural, untreated
Specimen of botryoidal hematite, also known as Kidney Ore, from the historic Rio Marina Mine on Elba Island, one of Europe's most important iron mining districts.
The sample exhibits a typical well-developed mammellonary morphology, with smooth and undulating surfaces, a bluish-gray metallic luster, and the presence of a natural limonitic matrix. Its shape and appearance are fully consistent with the classic Elban samples collected during the mining activity period.
The size and good integrity of the piece make it suitable for both systematic collections of Italian minerals and as an exhibit specimen.
