* technique: acid etching and/or sandblasting with gold trim.
Dimensions: height: 23 cm | diameter: 10 cm.
Condition: in good, used condition. No chips or cracks; normal age-related wear to the gilding.
description
An elegantly shaped baluster vase, executed in the characteristic salmon pink 'rosaline' glass that is typical of Belgian glass production during the interwar period. The object is characterized by a rhythmic division of horizontal registers. The wide, satin-finished (matte) bands are decorated with carved, clear wavy lines that create a playful optical effect against the matte background.
The different sections are separated by sleek, hand-painted gold banding. The vase tapers downward into a clear base and rests on a lightly profiled foot, also finished with gold. The rim is particularly beautifully finished with a notched 'mouse tooth' edge (*picot* edge), a detail that requires craftsmanship during the finishing process.
biography & context
Verreries de Rupel (1923-1982), based in Boom, grew in the 1930s to become one of Belgium's leading glass producers. The factory was known for its extensive range of pressed glass and blown glassware, often in rose and amber colors, frequently applying the geometric and satinized décors of the Art Deco style. This specific décor seamlessly aligns with Rupel's commercial line, which was aimed at decorative, luxuriously appearing objects.
Expert note
An authentic and representative piece of 'Boons glass'. The attribution to the Rupel is based on the specific combination of pink glass paste, gold rings, and the technique of the carved wave motif. A highly decorative object that perfectly represents the taste of the interwar period, and given the intact edge, it is a collectible piece.
