Description from the seller
A. C. Baudelaire (active in Strasbourg, mid-19th century)
Set of 14 photographic calling cards (CDV). Strasbourg, circa 1858–1873.
Homogeneous collection of fourteen photographic business cards, all from the Strasbourg workshop of A. C. Baudelaire, a photographer who presents himself as 'Painter & Photographer.' The set continuously illustrates the activity and graphic evolution of the workshop over about fifteen years, through several models of cards and two successive addresses: 4, rue Brûlée, then 3, rue des Charpentiers, Strasbourg.
The oldest cards, richly decorated with medals, coats of arms, and allegorical figures, date from 1858–1865; the more subdued models, sometimes printed in red or gray, correspond to the later period, the end of the Second Empire and the beginning of the Third Republic. The collection notably includes an original female portrait on albumen paper, mounted on signed cardboard, as well as CDVs with documentary function (verso, presentation cards), forming a rare and coherent corpus for the study of a provincial photographic workshop of the 19th century. A handwritten note dated 'March 1873' is present.
Ensemble maintained in a used condition, with occasional alterations and fading, without impairing readability or historical interest.
