"Aspiration" – An extraordinary fossil event
This extraordinary fossil depicts a dramatic moment from Earth's history: a Diplomystus dentatus, a freshwater herring, dying while attempting to swallow a Priscacara. The prey fish became lodged in its throat — a so-called aspiration death, which is extremely rare in the fossil record. Such snapshots provide unique insights into the behavior of prehistoric animals.
Location and geological context
The fossil originates from Kemmer, Wyoming (USA), and belongs to the famous Green River Formation from the Eocene, about 50 million years ago. The fine-grained sediments of this deposit allowed for exceptionally detailed preservation. The fossil slab measures 101 × 60 cm and even shows two individuals of Diplomystus.
paleontological significance
The larger Diplomystus with the swallowed Priscacara measures 45 cm, while the second specimen is 37 cm. This fossil is of particular scientific and collector's value, as it not only captures anatomy but also a rare documented case of hunting and misbehavior from prehistoric times.
