Description from the seller
Marantz 4400 Receiver — Flagship
Step into the world of vintage high-fidelity with the iconic Marantz 4400, a powerhouse from Marantz’s golden era of quadraphonic sound. Manufactured in the mid-1970s (roughly 1974–1978) , this receiver was the flagship quadraphonic model — brimming with premium features, raw power, and timeless design.
Why the Marantz 4400 stands out:
Produces 125 W per channel in stereo and 50 W per channel in quadraphonic mode, delivering both punch and nuance.
Maintains a remarkably low Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of 0.15%, ensuring clean, crisp audio across the board.
Broad frequency response, spanning 20 Hz to 20 kHz, with exceptional power bandwidth going from ~7 Hz up to 70 kHz.
Built-in oscilloscope on the front panel — not just a visual flair, but a functional tuning meter and real-time signal display.
Flexible quadraphonic decoding: uses plug-in decoders (SQ, QS, CD-4, etc.), so you can adapt to different 4-channel formats.
Advanced Dolby FM noise-reduction, with a multi-position switch to select different operation modes (FM Dolby, playback, record).
Tone control galore: independent bass, mid, treble for front & rear channels, plus filter switches (high-cut, low-cut) and loudness compensation.
Robust build: damping factor around 40–50 (depending on mode) for tight speaker control.
Substantial chassis — heavy, premium metal construction, measuring 490 × 146 × 386 mm and weighing in at about 23–24 kg (≈ 51.6 lb).
Wide input options (phono, AUX, tape), plus plenty of output flexibility — folks have reported using this with both 2-channel and 4-channel speaker setups.
Historical & collector appeal:
Released with a list price of US$1,250, positioning it as a serious audiophile instrument.
Designed for quadraphonic systems, but also highly musical in stereo — an ideal choice for both vintage vinyl lovers and 4-speaker enthusiasts.
Because of its age and engineering sophistication, it's also collectible — especially when paired with the optional wood cabinet or original quad decoders.
