Description from the seller
This rare and comprehensive book explores eroticism in Japan during the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods.
The author is American John Stevens (1947–2025, passed away in July), a professor of Buddhist studies and American Aikido.
Written in both English and Japanese, this book offers a deeper understanding of shunga art. Every illustration is accompanied by a caption, and there is a comprehensive index at the end.
The book features a wide range of illustrations, from masters like Hokusai, Izumo Taisha (The Sea Couple), and Fukiya Koji (Taisho period) to relatively new artists of the Taisho and Showa periods, such as Iwata Sentaro, Kimura Shohachi, and Ito Ikuzo. Many of the images are less well-known, making it a fascinating read.
The book is larger than it looks, measuring 26.5 x 19.5 cm, with 153 numbered pages, a dust jacket, and a dust jacket. Only 300 copies (No. 32) are available.
