Wolfgang Tillmans, a photographer and visual artist, lives and works in London and Berlin. Like Nan Goldin or Larry Clark, he often photographs scenes of intimacy, but he also produces abstract works. This major exhibition and the accompanying book constitute a broad reflection on the medium of photography, showcasing works by Wolfgang Tillmans created between 1989 and 2017, as well as a new audiovisual installation. Tillmans gained recognition in the early 1990s with iconic images capturing the approach to life of an entire generation, marked by a love for carefree freedom and a desire to enjoy the present moment. To achieve this, he photographed people and situations from his immediate environment in London, New York, or Berlin, thus creating a portrait of a new generation with a distinctive style. However, he quickly expanded his scope and explored photographic experiences to invent a new iconographic language. As a result, works emerged that used or did not use a camera, as well as photocopiers. Beyond traditional genres such as portraits, still lifes, or landscapes, this exhibition features abstract works that play with the boundaries of visibility. It demonstrates that it is not classical photography that takes center stage in Tillmans' work, but the creation of images. For nearly 30 years, Wolfgang Tillmans has continuously questioned and expanded the possibilities of photography through all means, both in his photographic and film works. His images can reveal moments of beauty and desire but also carry social and political dimensions. In 2017, Wolfgang Tillmans was the subject of another major exhibition at Tate Modern in London. In 2018, he participated in the international photography meeting with an exhibition at Carré d’Art in Nîmes, as part of Les Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles outside the walls. In 2025, he conceived an unprecedented project covering 6,000 square meters at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
