I managed, with great care and many efforts, to recover an accurate copy of the translation of the five Portuguese Letters written to a noble gentleman stationed in Portugal. I have spoken to all those who understand sentiments, praising or seeking them with such urgency that I believed, by publishing them, to give them great pleasure. I do not know the name of the person to whom they were written, nor of the one who translated them, but it seemed to me that, by making them known, I would not cause them any displeasure.
