These pearls were found in the south of Niger and were used as a form of payment during the Neolithic and early iron age. There are a few beads in the chain of more recent date, probably 19th century, however, most are late Neolithic. (One pearl is made from glass, a so called ' feather bead, 19th century) Some are conically sharpened, others were left rough. Carnelian is the red variety of Agate.
