Description from the seller
Description
Rare, original temple base made of solid wood, fully hand-carved, and formerly part of a Hindu shrine or architectural temple complex.
The top is equipped with a metal bowl and a solid iron spike, typical for holding large altar or pillar candles.
Object: architectural fragment / base / plinth
Material: Massive hardwood, fully carved from a solid block, original polychrome (red, gray/white, traces of blue).
Dating: 19th century (ca. 1850–1900)
Origin: North India
Dimensions & Weight: Height: approx. 23 cm, Width: approx. 26 cm, Depth: approx. 23 cm, Weight: 6.7 kg
The pedestal displays a powerful, block-like form with side volutes, vertical flutes, and a surrounding pedestal zone. The round opening at the top was originally used to secure a cult figure, a ritual vessel, or an oil lamp.
Original colorations are preserved, including temple red (Sindoor), gray/white, and scattered traces of blue pigment. The polychromy is heavily worn but remains authentic and deeply rooted in the carvings – a clear sign of long-standing ritual use.
The wood aging with natural drying cracks, signs of use, and old stabilization interventions precisely matches an object from the 19th century. It is not later tourist merchandise, but a genuine architectural fragment from a religious context.
state
Good condition appropriate for age.
Typical signs of wear and tear, cracks, loss of color, and signs of use are present.

Special Notice
