An impressive and highly decorative large jelly spoon crafted in solid sterling silver (925/1000) by the renowned American silversmith Gorham Manufacturing Company.
This example is executed in the Baronial-Old pattern, patented in 1898, one of Gorham’s most elaborate and sculptural Renaissance-Revival designs.

Maker: Gorham, USA
Pattern: Baronial-Old (Sterling, 1898)
Material: Sterling silver 925
Length: 22.3 cm
Width: 8 cm
Weight: approx. 137 g
Marks: Gorham hallmarks (lion–anchor–G), STERLING, PAT. 1898

This large serving spoon displays the dramatic ornamental style for which Gorham became famous at the end of the 19th century.
The handle is richly decorated with scrolling acanthus leaves, masks, and floral motifs, all executed with deep relief and sharp detailing.
The wide, beautifully shaped bowl is ideal for serving jelly, fruit compote, sauces, or desserts, making it both a functional and highly decorative table piece.

Examples of the Baronial pattern are sought after by collectors due to their artistry, weight, and the exceptional quality of Gorham’s workmanship during the American Gilded Age.

Historical Background – Gorham & the Old Baronial Pattern

Gorham Manufacturing Company (founded 1831, Providence, Rhode Island) became one of America’s leading luxury silver producers.
The Baronial-Old pattern, introduced in 1898, belongs to Gorham’s series of richly modelled Renaissance-inspired flatware designs, created during a period when American silversmiths competed with the best European houses in complexity and craftsmanship.

This piece represents the height of Gorham’s artistic production: bold, ornate, and unmistakably luxurious.
