Description from the seller
Germany. Hamburg. 1/2 million marks. 1923.
Value: 500,000 mark.
Year: 1923.
- Inscription: NOTGELD 1/2 MILLION MARK AUGUST 1923 on one side; FREE AND HANSEATIC CITY OF HAMBURG surrounding the city coat of arms, held by two rampant lions on the other.
- Rating: MS64 (NGC).
Issue of Notgeld minted in aluminum during the hyperinflation period of the Weimar Republic, when local authorities issued emergency currency to address the cash shortage. The design is particularly attractive and symbolic: one side clearly and forcefully displays the extraordinary face value of half a million marks, a direct reflection of the monetary collapse of 1923, while the reverse shows the elaborate coat of arms of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, flanked by lions and crowned with a heraldic helmet, with a notable level of detail for a necessity piece. The specimen retains a very attractive original shine, with clean fields and well-defined reliefs, features that fully justify its high grading and make it a representative and highly sought-after piece within German emergency numismatics.
Disclaimer: For orders shipped outside the European Union, I want to make it absolutely clear that I ship from Spain. This means that if the package is sent to any country outside the European Union, and/or inside the EU that has a special tax agreement (for example: Canary Islands), it might be stopped in your local customs, and they might ask you to pay taxes. This is a customs legal procedure and is completely out of our control. Thank you for your understanding.
