Description from the seller

Beautifully detailed image of Mary Magdalene from the first half of the 18th century.

According to a French legend, Mary Magdalene arrived in the South of France at Les-Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer with her brother Lazarus after being sent across the Mediterranean by the Jews in a boat without a sail. From there, they continued to Marseille to preach the gospel. According to the same legend, Mary Magdalene lived as a penitent in a cave for thirty years due to her sinful youth.

In iconography, she is often depicted with lush, long hair that covers her nudity. During the Baroque period, her penitence was further emphasized by the unflattering animal skins she was dressed in. Although this image dates from the first half of the 18th century, it still exhibits all the characteristics of French Baroque, with a typical restrained opulence.

Condition report: This image is in generally good condition and shows signs of normal wear and tear.
