Description from the seller
BODYWORK / PAINT
This 1968 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL, delivered to Europe in Italy, is finished in Signal Red with a contrasting black leather interior. The body is in excellent condition, with a beautiful gloss and only age-appropriate wear. The car presents itself in a very well-maintained manner.
The body is straight, with correct panel gaps and well-fitting doors, hood, and trunk lid. Chromework, including bumpers, trim, and mirrors, is complete and shiny, without visible pitting or corrosion. The underside may require attention in the future. The black soft top fits perfectly, and the removable hardtop is also in good condition. Classic 14" steel wheels with painted hubcaps complete the authentic look.
Technical Condition
Mechanically, this 280 SL is in excellent condition and features matching numbers. The 2.8-liter inline-six engine runs smoothly, delivering power linearly and quietly. The four-speed manual gearbox shifts crisply and precisely, providing a pure driving experience.
Regular maintenance and recent servicing ensure trouble-free operation. Key works performed in November 2020 include:
Overhaul of steering and suspension
Repair of turn signal operation
Replacement of engine and transmission oil
Replacement of subframe bushings, shifter yoke, and driveshaft seals.
Replacement of spark plugs, plug wires, air filter, and fuel filter.
Replacement of exhaust hangers, fan belt, tensioner, and idler pulley.
Thanks to this service, the car is mechanically sound and ready for many years of enjoyable driving.
Interior
The interior is upholstered in black leather, which is in very good condition. The seats are comfortable and show only normal wear. The dashboard, door panels, and carpeting are clean and original.
All gauges and electrical components, including lighting, wipers, blower, and audio, function correctly. The original steering wheel remains, adding to the authentic charm of this timeless classic. The air conditioning blows cold air and is fully functional. An aftermarket CD/cassette stereo provides modern convenience without detracting from the classic interior.

Catawiki always aims to offer you the best possible buying experience. Our experts virtually review and select every vehicle in line with our submission guidelines and we require our sellers to provide the most accurate description of the vehicle. However, providing a fully detailed analysis of the vehicle is extremely difficult, and close to impossible. To guide you, we ask our sellers to provide information about the vehicle’s condition. Please consider that most vehicles for sale are classic vehicles and they often already have a whole life behind them, meaning that even a condition 1 or 2 vehicle might need maintenance to be ready for the road. It is advised to carefully read our submission guidelines that further describe details about the condition grades and types to manage your expectations. Cars are sold “as is”, meaning as described and in the condition they are in at the time of the sale and without any representation, warranty or assumption of liability of any kind as to the condition by Catawiki or by the seller. The condition of this item is the opinion of the seller and may differ from yours, your local garage, or the dealer’s opinion. This does not automatically mean the car does not conform to its description. Before bidding, please check your local legislation regarding vehicle registration. Neither the seller nor Catawiki is responsible for the registration of the vehicle in your country and will not accept a cancellation for your failure to register the vehicle. We also recommend that, if possible, you arrange a viewing with the seller before placing a bid.
