Commemorative coin of large denomination issued to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Vasco da Gama's discovery of the maritime route to India. The obverse features superimposed busts of Carlos I and Queen Amelia, finely engraved and of notable artistic quality, with excellent definition of facial features, decorations, and court attire. The reverse is dominated by the cross of the Order of Christ, the central symbol of Portuguese maritime expansion, accompanied by a rich historical legend and commemorative dates. The specimen retains complete details typical of a coin that has not circulated. It is one of the most emblematic and sought-after pieces of modern Portuguese numismatics, both for its historical importance and its outstanding artistic execution.
