Description from the seller
Native sulfur on calcite – Cozzo Disi Mine, Sicily – 3.5 kg
Mineral: Native Sulfur (S)
Associated mineral: Calcite (botryoidal aggregates)
Locality: Cozzo Disi Mine, Casteltermini, Agrigento Province, Sicily, Italy
Weight: approx. 3.5 kg
Dimensions: approx. 28 × 20 × 13 cm
Offered is an impressive and highly aesthetic native sulfur specimen from the historic Cozzo Disi mine, one of the most renowned sulfur localities in Sicily and worldwide.
The specimen displays abundant, well-formed lemon-yellow sulfur crystals, arranged in layered and elongated aggregates, beautifully contrasting with the white to cream botryoidal calcite matrix. The color saturation is intense and natural, typical of classic Sicilian sulfur, with excellent visual impact even at a distance.
The overall size and mass make this a true cabinet to large display specimen, far above average for this locality. The crystallization is rich and three-dimensional, with sulfur present across multiple faces of the matrix, not just superficially.
Sicilian sulfur from Cozzo Disi is historically significant, as these mines were among the world’s leading sulfur producers during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, such large and well-preserved specimens are increasingly rare, especially those with vibrant color and minimal damage.
Condition: Natural, as found. No artificial treatment or restoration. Minor micro-edge contacts consistent with mining extraction. Rarity: Large-size Cozzo Disi sulfur specimens with this level of preservation and color are uncommon on the market. Display: Ideal for advanced collectors, museum displays, or high-end mineral cabinets.
A classic and highly collectible Italian mineral specimen combining aesthetic beauty, size, and historical significance.
