Description from the seller
1946 Great Britain King George VI 1 Shilling (English Crest) Silver Coin NGC MS62
Highlights:
1. This design centres upon the portrait of King George VI, creating a precious emblem that bears witness to both imperial and wartime history.
2. he final batch of coins minted in silver holds special significance in British numismatic history.
3. As a silver coin from the George VI series, this piece is attractive to British modern coin collectors, particularly suitable for collecting post-war British currency or silver coin series.
Coin Story:
This 1946 British George VI Shilling silver coin (English version) was issued during the reign of King George VI (1936-1952), right in the post-World War II economic recovery phase. George VI was an important symbol of the British monarchy, leading the country through the war years, and this coin reflects the imperial legacy of the time. The obverse features the king's left-facing portrait, designed by T. H. Paget; the reverse shows a lion standing on a crown, separating the date, designed by George Krueger-Gray.
As one of the last batches of circulating shillings minted in silver (switched to cupronickel from 1947 onward), it marks a turning point in the transition of British currency from precious metals to base metals, carrying historical transitional significance, symbolizing post-war Britain's fiscal adjustments and the decline of the empire.
NGC MS62 (Mint State 62, uncirculated but with minor contact marks) grade, well-preserved high-quality versions are less common, with medium rarity, mainly depending on the condition rather than the year itself.
