Description from the seller
Holy Roman Empire silver thaler – 1582 – 41 mm – 28.4 g
A finely preserved silver thaler minted under Emperor Rudolf II in 1582, during the height of Habsburg dominion. Struck in Kremnitz (mintmark B), this coin displays the artistic and political power of the Holy Roman Empire, showcasing the dual role of Rudolf II as both Emperor and King of Hungary and Bohemia. The obverse features a magnificently engraved armored bust of Rudolf II facing right, surrounded by an imperial Latin legend, while the reverse presents the crowned double-headed eagle of the empire holding the regalia of power.
The coin offers superb eye appeal with clear legends, strong details on the armor and facial features, and a sharp eagle reverse. Despite some faint hairlines—likely from historical cleaning—the fields retain a soft underlying luster. This is a high-grade example from one of the most iconic periods of Habsburg numismatic history.
