Ancient Greek Silver Drachm – Alexander III “the Great” (336–323 BC)
Kingdom of Macedon, 4th century BC
This authentic ancient Greek silver drachm is issued in the name of Alexander III of Macedon, universally known as Alexander the Great, one of history’s most influential military leaders and empire builders. Struck during the late Classical to early Hellenistic period, this coin reflects the artistic excellence and political symbolism of Alexander’s vast empire.
Obverse
Head of Herakles (Hercules) facing right
Depicted wearing the lion skin of the Nemean Lion, tied beneath the chin
The image symbolizes divine strength, heroism, and royal legitimacy, as Alexander claimed descent from Herakles
Reverse
Zeus Aëtophoros seated left on a throne
Zeus holds an eagle in his outstretched right hand and a scepter in his left
Greek legend: ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ (“of Alexander”), identifying the coinage as issued under Alexander’s authority
This reverse type became one of the most iconic and widely copied coin designs in ancient history, circulating across Greece, Asia Minor, the Levant, and beyond.
Historical Context
Alexander’s silver coinage played a vital role in unifying the economies of his empire. Drachms such as this were used for daily transactions and military payments, ensuring the spread of Greek culture and iconography throughout the known world. Even after Alexander’s death in 323 BC, these coins continued to be minted by his successors (the Diadochi), attesting to his enduring legacy.
