Description from the seller
ROMAN EMPIRE – Probus (AD 276–282) - Silvered Billon Antoninianus – Antioch Mint
This impressive antoninianus was issued during the reign of Emperor Probus, one of the most capable soldier-emperors of the late 3rd century AD. Probus is celebrated for restoring stability to the Roman Empire after decades of crisis, successfully defending the frontiers against barbarian invasions and reasserting imperial authority across Gaul, the Balkans, and the East.
Obverse
IMP C M AVR PROBVS P F AVG
Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Probus facing right, emphasizing his military role and imperial authority.
Reverse
CLEMENTIA TEMP
Probus standing right, holding a parazonium, receiving Victory on a globe from Jupiter, who stands left holding a scepter.
This powerful scene symbolizes divine favor, clemency, and the restoration of order (Clementia Temporum) following years of turmoil.
Mint Marks:
• B in field
• XXI in exergue (indicating the silvered antoninianus standard)
Historical Context
Probus (AD 276–282) was renowned not only as a victorious general but also as a reformer. He strengthened frontier defenses, repopulated devastated provinces, and famously employed his soldiers in large-scale public works during peacetime. His reign marked a brief but significant revival of stability before the reforms of Diocletian.
