【Product details】
This is a 2024 limited edition giclée print on handmade washi paper, titled "Hyaku Monogatari Momonjii no Shūnen o Omou – Shissindontan (One Hundred Ghost Stories - Reflecting on the tenacious spirit of Momonji) ゲゲゲ浮世絵 妖怪百物語 百々爺の執念を思ふ 漆身呑炭", from the official GeGeGe no Kitarō Ukiyo-e collaboration series. This is hand-numbered No. 36 out of only 100 first edition prints.
GeGeGe no Kitarō is a legendary anime and manga series about Kitarō, the last surviving boy of the ghost tribe, who interacts with a wide range of traditional yōkai (spirits and monsters) from Japanese folklore. The series played a pivotal role in popularising these supernatural beings across Japan and sparked a nationwide yōkai boom. Its eerie, mysterious, and occasionally whimsical world blends remarkably well with the aesthetic of traditional ukiyo-e, both sharing deep roots in Japanese visual storytelling and cultural imagination.
Inspired by Katsushika Hokusai’s original "Hyaku Monogatari – Shūnen" ("One Hundred Ghost Stories – Obsession"), this modern reinterpretation blends Edo-period ghost lore with beloved anime characters Kitarō and Medama-oyaji. The artwork presents a quiet but eerie moment as Kitarō and his father reflect on the lingering grudge of the yōkai Momonjii.
Created by print artist Ebata Yoshiyuki and printed by Hanzo Ukiyo-e Kōbō (版三浮世絵工房), the print uses the giclée technique on torinoko washi paper crafted by the renowned Iwano Heisaburō workshop. The image beautifully captures the textures, fibres, and colour unevenness typical of antique woodblock prints. Giclée allows for exceptional colour fidelity and longevity, commonly used in the reproduction of valuable cultural artworks.
Framed in a sleek black frame made from resin and aluminium with acrylic glazing.
