Louis XIV, known as 'the Great' or 'the Sun King' (1638-1715)

Patent on parchment signed 'Louis' (secretary with countersignature of Jérôme Phélypeaux de Pontchartrain) at Versailles on January 9, 1701.

Louis XIV grants to Sir Chamillart, Controller General of Finances, the position of Secretary of State and of his commands, vacant due to the death of Sir le Tellier, Marquis of Barbezieux. [...] His Majesty has commanded me to dispatch all necessary letters for the execution of his will in this matter, and this present patent, which he has signed with his own hand and made countersign by me, his counselor, Secretary of State and of his commands and finances.

Louis-François-Marie Le Tellier de Barbezieux died on January 5, 1701, four days before the signing of this document. He was the third son of the Marquis de Louvois and the Secretary of State for War under Louis XIV.

His successor mentioned here, Michel Chamillart (1654-1721), was both Minister of Finance and Minister of War. He had to face the 1709 financial crisis and the War of Spanish Succession.
