Description from the seller
New, unused unit with the original Sony Betamax case – Early 1980s.
Sony SL-F1E, one of the most distinctive and rare Betamax video recorders produced by Sony in the early 1980s. The unit presented stands out exceptionally for its condition, as it is new, unused, from old stock, and comes with its original Sony Betamax carrying case.
The SL-F1E was not conceived as a conventional domestic video recorder. Sony designed it as a compact, modular, high-end system aimed at integrating into advanced Hi-Fi environments and light professional applications. Its sober aesthetic, ultracompact format, and solid metal construction clearly reflect the Japanese engineering philosophy of the time, where domestic video was approached with the same rigor as high-fidelity audio.
The unit is maintained in an outstanding condition. The front panel, controls, silkscreens, and chassis present an impeccable appearance, with no signs of use, wear, or tampering. It still retains the original protective plastics, and the accessories remain sealed as they left the factory. Out of respect for its status as a collectible item, the equipment has not been tested, remaining entirely in its original condition.
The set includes the original Sony AC-F1E power adapter, also in new condition, as well as the original Sony Betamax case, a particularly significant item. This case, with a rigid structure and metallic finishes, was specifically designed to transport and display the SL-F1E system, with interior compartments adapted to the unit and its accessories. Finding this case with the equipment, and in such well-preserved condition, is uncommon and adds significant value to the set.
At the time of its launch, the Sony SL-F1E was positioned at the top of the market, with a price clearly higher than that of standard domestic VCRs. Its cost was equivalent to several months of average salary, which explains both its limited distribution and the extreme rarity of finding complete and brand-new specimens today.
This model is today a very prominent piece of Sony, of the Betamax format and high-end vintage electronics. Beyond its original function, the SL-F1E represents a key milestone in the history of home video and in the technological design evolution of Sony.
The visible condition in the photographs is an essential part of the description and defines the exceptional character of this set.
