Description from the seller
Nautilus fossils are the fossilized remains of ancient marine mollusks, part of the cephalopod family along with octopuses, squid, and the extinct ammonites.
Nautilus fossils are famous for their stunning external shells wrapped around with spiral patterns and colorful chambers. The Nautilus still exists today and inhabits the deep coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific Ocean.
These living Nautilus creatures are called 'living fossils': a rare type of creature very similar biologically to their ancient fossil ancestors.
In the last 500 million years, the evolution of the Nautilus has been slow and minimal, which means that Nautilus fossils are very similar to living Nautilus creatures.
Ammonites, another famous type of cephalopod fossil, are completely extinct, so Nautilus are the only cephalopods with an external shell that swim in the seas in the modern world.
This specimen shows about 50% of the shell in a beautiful brown color due to the presence of Aragonite, while the other half displays pearly hues.
