Natural, complete Prognathodon giganteus jaw specimen from the Late Cretaceous, mounted in a black lacquered wooden frame, measuring 180 × 90 × 14 cm and originating from Morocco.
Description from the seller
Extraordinary and monumental MASCELLA of Mosasaurus
Species: Prognathodon giganteus
We are offering at auction an exceptionally rare and museum-quality paleontological find: a colossal fossil jaw of Prognathodon giganteus, the largest known species of the mosasaur family, beautifully presented in a custom-made, refined black lacquered wood frame.
The jaw is intact, original, and completely natural, belonging to a single and extraordinary specimen. This formidable marine predator dominated the oceans during the Late Cretaceous, about 90 million years ago, placing itself at the absolute top of the food chain.
With a length of 130 cm, the find testifies to exceptional dimensions, attributable to an animal estimated to be over 18 meters long and weighing approximately 12,000 kg. Finds of such scale and completeness are extremely rare: almost all large jaws or skulls of similar size on the market are composed of elements belonging to multiple individuals.
This specimen, on the other hand, is attributable to a single individual, making it a lot of absolute significance and probably unrepeatable.
The state of preservation is extraordinary, with a remarkable richness of details for a fossil of this size. The jaw retains 23 large original teeth, perfectly formed, along with 3 replacement teeth, totaling 26 teeth, which is of great scientific and collector interest.
The elegant black lacquered wooden frame further enhances the visual impact of the piece, transforming it into a work of significant display and design value, ideal for high-level private collections, museums, foundations, institutional offices, or prestigious executive environments.
The fossil comes from the historic phosphate mine of Oued Zem (Morocco), from which it was extracted about 8 years ago. This location, now closed for about 2 years, is renowned for producing the best mosasaur specimens ever found. The current discoveries, from the Sidi Chennane mine, show significantly lower quality and integrity, further increasing the rarity and value of this lot.
