Description from the seller
Exceptional and large fossil skull of Elasmosaurus.
Period: Upper Cretaceous, about 80 million years ago.
Extraordinary fossil skull belonging to an exceptional adult specimen of Elasmosaurus, one of the most iconic and fascinating marine reptiles of the Cretaceous. Majestic and imposing animal, characterized by its famous extremely elongated neck, which traversed the vast prehistoric oceans and is traditionally considered the inspiration for the legendary figure of the Loch Ness Monster.
The specimen presented represents a discovery of absolute rarity. Fossils of Elasmosaurus are indeed extremely rare in phosphate deposits, and the finding of complete skulls is exceptional due to the delicacy and fragility of the bones. Pieces of this quality are hardly available on the collector's market.
The skull is in good condition, with excellent bone quality and well-defined foramina, offering excellent anatomical readability and a remarkable aesthetic impact.
Skull length: approximately 45 cm, indicative of a fully grown specimen belonging to an animal that could exceed 12 meters in total length.
The artifact is accompanied by an elegant display support made of wood and iron, designed to enhance its museum presence and make it immediately ready for exhibition.
Provenance: Sidi Chennane phosphate formation, Morocco, one of the most well-known areas in the world for Cretaceous marine vertebrate finds.
This skull represents a piece of great interest for high-level private collections, museums, foundations, companies, and representative spaces, where it can serve as a central element of significant historical, scientific, and display value.
