Description from the seller
→12.5 cm long x 3 cm wide at widest point canine of Basilosaurus
This is a very cool canine of canine of Basilosaurus which infact by its long bit fatty but sleak looks represents Basilosaurus itself. Basilosaurus was unsually long but sleak whale and the biggest representative of archaeocetes or ancient whale family and top predator of shallow seas of late Eocene.
Its teeth were powerful and the canines were just behind incisors to puncture and hold onto prey along with very strong and ig molars for shearing the flesh. The tip of the presented canine is not there but interesting it offers a glimpse into inside of the teeth as given in closeup photos. Also, the inside of the root is also visible at the bottom as can be seen in other closeup photo.
The enamel and crown region of teeth is in very beautiful brown color while the root is creamy white/light brown coloration.
The root is unusally long compared to the crown of the teeth indicating that the canines were deeply rooted and very strong to hold onto prey and puncture it. There is evidence that Basilosaurus also preyed on smaller member of Basilosauridae family i.e., Durodon just like present day Orcas (which is largest Dolphin) prey upon other Dolphins.
The teeth has been professionally re-bonded at the bottom and minor cracks have been filled. The teeth has been conserved as well to make it long lasting.
