Description from the seller
Superb chatelaine with its chain, made of 925 silver. The first hallmark is the Minerva punch for the support, with no punch for the quadruple chain, but it meets the Ag 800 acid test. However, there is no certainty regarding the two mousetraps. It is in good condition considering its age. Weight: 51.2 grams.
Historical context:
The chatelaine was an essential fashion and utility item for women of high society in the 18th and 19th centuries. Worn at the waist, it served both as a symbol of social status and as a practical tool: keys, bags, sewing supplies, cosmetics, or notebooks could be kept within easy reach. In France and England, in particular, the silver chatelaine became a prized display piece, often richly decorated and sometimes personalized. Toward the end of the 19th century, the chatelaine took on a more ornamental and luxurious function, as clearly demonstrated by this example.
