Description from the seller
An 18th-century English oak Bible box, with the front panel and side panels hand-carved, and equipped with metal hinges. The tilted upper lectern lifts to reveal an open interior with a small storage compartment; the whole has been later covered with a green velvet-like fabric.
The internal height on the front edge is about 14 cm.
Iron front lock (the upper part of the lock is missing).
Dimensions: width 66 cm, depth 45.5 cm, height 29 cm. Approximate weight about 12 kg.
A Bible box is a container used to store a Bible.
This box could be used to safely transport what was a very expensive book. Many varieties had a top part inclined, intended for reading when the box was placed on a table. In a sense, it therefore served as a portable lectern.
Over the years, the typical Bible box was also used or specifically built to hold writing tools such as a goose quill, an inkwell, blotting paper, and letter paper. The inclined surface of the box served as a desk for writing as well as for reading.
Boxes for Bibles were popular in the 17th century. Many of the most refined examples can be found in museums.
In generally good condition with normal signs of age and wear.
Please review the photographic gallery carefully, as it is an integral part of the description, to avoid any unpleasant misunderstandings.
Careful packaging and shipping with tracking.
