Description from the seller
Russian Orthodox icon of Christ Pantocrator with saints on the margins, a very classic typology.
Main identification
Cristo Pantocrátor (Lord Almighty)
Christ appears from the waist up, facing forward, blessing with his right hand and holding the open Gospel with his left.
Cruciferous symbol with the Greek letters Ο Ω Ν ('The One Who Is'), an unmistakable sign of divinity.
Red tunic (humanity) and blue-green himation (divinity), a traditional color scheme.
Solemn, asymmetrical, and highly spiritualized face, typical of Byzantine iconography inherited by Russia.
Registrations
On both sides of the halo: IC XC (Jesus Christ).
At chest level: The Lord Almighty (Pantocrátor).
Gospel text
The open book contains a text in ecclesiastical Slavic, the usual variant of Matthew 11:28.
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
This passage highlights Christ as a merciful judge and savior.
Side figures
In the vertical margins, small full-body saints appear, probably:
Saints, monks, and martyrs, highly venerated in Russia.
They could include San Nicolás, local saints, or fathers of monasticism (the exact identification depends on the inscriptions, which are now heavily worn).
This format reinforces the domestic devotional character of the icon.
Style, technique, and dating
Egg temple on a board, with a golden background.
Natural cracking of the gold and polychromy, wear consistent with age.
Strong line drawing, elongated faces, and sober golden backgrounds.
Probable dating: 18th – first half of the 19th century
Origin: Russia (possibly workshops from central or northern Russia).
Iconographic value
It is a theologically orthodox icon, not decorative, designed for prayer. The combination of Christ Pantocrator and marginal saints was very common for private veneration.
